Synopsis
This is the story of America’s worst environmental disaster. Located in northeast Oklahoma and once home to one of the world’s largest lead and zinc mines, Tar Creek is a 47 square mile wasteland that is now home to creeks full of acid mine water, mountains of lead mine waste causing astronomic lead poisoning in children, and sinkholes from collapsing mines that threaten to swallow these former boom towns. The government has spent over $200 million trying to fix Tar Creek, and now they are buying the citizens out of their homes and moving them to safety. This mining strike was leased a century ago from the Quapaw Tribe, and once the citizens leave, the Quapaws will be handed back the worst environmental disaster in the country. If we continue to completely destroy another 47 square miles of America for the next barrel of oil or lead casing, we can’t ever get back what we're trying to save.
Music from Blues legend Watermelon Slim is featured in the film.
